Good to know
- Social insurance comes first: health insurance, employees’ pension and employment insurance are about 14–15% of pay, and they lower your income tax. Your employer pays the same again.
- Resident tax (about 10%) is charged on last year’s income, starting each June. In your first year in Japan you usually pay none, then it starts the next June. Use the switch above.
- From age 40 to 64 you also pay long-term care insurance (0.81% of pay).
- Pay is treated as 12 equal months. Japanese insurance uses rounded pay grades and many employers pay bonuses, so real amounts differ a little. Dependents, life insurance and other deductions are not included.
- Income tax includes the 2.1% reconstruction surtax. From 2027 income it becomes 1.1% plus a new 1% defense tax.
- Tax year. Income earned in 2026 (rates from April 2026).
