Senior Software Engineer, Certificate Management

The Security Platform Engineering group at Coinbase is responsible for the certificate management infrastructure that underpins the entire organization's systems. This foundational technology enables secure communication across all Coinbase services and extends to external partners. As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will own critical initiatives that require deep cryptographic expertise and the ability to architect solutions for zero-trust, high-stakes environments.

What you'll do

• Lead the design and execution of cryptographic infrastructure that powers Coinbase's most sensitive systems
• Establish technical direction over multiple quarters, transforming ambiguous requirements into concrete solutions for novel cryptographic challenges
• Own high-risk initiatives by implementing secure and resilient protocols in environments where system failures are not an option
• Set standards for engineering quality across the team, conducting thorough code reviews and eliminating architectural weaknesses
• Build consensus with stakeholders in Security, Product, and Policy to ensure flawless delivery of complex initiatives

What you'll bring

• At least 5 years building highly available, distributed systems at scale
• Deep expertise in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and applied cryptography, including hands-on experience operating certificate authorities, automating X.509 certificate lifecycles (issuance, renewal, revocation, trust-chain distribution), and securing private keys with HSMs or cloud KMS
• Strong programming skills in systems languages such as Golang, Java, C++, or Rust, with comfort working in a Golang-focused environment
• Proven success operating Tier-0 or mission-critical infrastructure where performance, security, and reliability are non-negotiable
• Track record leading technical strategy and architecture for large-scale projects, including managing complex regulatory requirements and translating them into engineering outcomes
• Experience using generative AI tools responsibly to enhance your workflow and deliver business-ready results
